Myth: The Police Automatically Respond to a Home Alarm with a Monitoring System


Most people think that if a burglar triggers the back-to-base home alarm the police will automatically respond. They won’t!
The police only respond if your alarm system is classed Category A. Unfortunately, most alarm systems are only Category B.
How do I know if my Home Alarm is Category A or Category B?

1. Has your alarm been regularly serviced by a Professional Security Service Technician in accordance with Australian Standards?
2. Has the battery had a back-up change or been tested?
3. Is the Alarm Monitoring done by a Grade A1 Control Room?

No? A home alarm that is not being regularly serviced and maintained in accordance with Australian standards, is then classed as Category B. This means no police response. The best you’ll get is a security patrol – but only if it was pre-authorised. Security patrols generally achieve slower response times than your local police and may not confront the burglar.

What’s more, you’ll incur a cost of $70-$120 for the call out - even if it is a false alarm. (Category B systems can often false alarm, which is why the police do not automatically respond to them).  

If a security patrol has not been pre-authorised and the Security Monitoring Centre cannot reach any of your Emergency Contacts...  absolutely nothing happens! The burglar gets away, with your possessions…
